Are Plastic Drinking Water Bottles Safe?

We've been assured for the past decade or so that the best drinking water from our neighborhood water systems in the nation is potentially full of toxic chemicals like lead, chlorine, mercury, copper and bacteria. We've read frightening stories about municipal water systems being polluted by sewage systems. As a result, people got used to bottled drinking water as a safer and safer choice to ordinary tap water.

Now we're learning that bottled drinking water isn't as good for us as we believed. Firstly there's the container itself. That handy plastic water bottle we've gotten used to carrying around with us is often made from plastics that bear cancer-producing toxins named phthalates. They really leach into the water that we're drinking and accumulate in our bloodstreams. Reports are showing that the concentrations of phthalates in our bodies are increasing with each generation, principally as a result of bottled drinking water packaged in toxic plastic containers.

Then there is the fact that these plastic water bottles are not biodegradable. Plastics now make up at least 25% of the substances of our landfills. And plastics will not break down for at least 10,000 years...some estimations are even worse. So our healthy-water solution has turned into a big health hazard. What can mortals do?

Fortunately, there are a couple of simple and low-cost solutions to our bottled drinking water troubles.
You can install a simple filtrate system onto your kitchen spigot. And you can now purchase a portable filter system that's as handy as your one-time sports bottle, but the bottle isn't toxic. They'll keep down chlorine and heavy metals, and in general make your tap water taste more organic. For example, the Brita system costs about $20 - $40 for the starter kit, and $20 for each replacement filter. It will filter about one hundred gallons of drinking water and lasts for about 4 months.

For virtually the same price, you can now get a 16 ounce portable filter system, from Back to the Tap, which actually filters as you drink. It uses a number 4 LDPE plastic bottle, which is the kind of plastic that does not leach phthalates into your water. The filters are interchangeable, and you can replenish it anywhere with regular tap water. It can be refilled about three hundred times, so that's three hundred sports bottles you're not adding to the surplus of plastic that's already in our landfills.

Going green does take some forethought and preparation, though it's becoming more elementary every day. It's very rewarding when you can realize an immediate impact on your own health. It's an added incentive when taking care of your own wellness also makes the environment sounder
