What Do You Think? Are Plastic Water Bottles Eco Friendly?
Have you ever thought about how many plastic bottles get thrown away each week? Well I certainly hadn't thought of it before. At least not until I found out that a lot of the bottled water out there isn't anything but tap water in a bottle. That got me started investigating bottled water.
I found out that there are more than 60 million plastic bottles of water produced, transported and disposed of every day. And that's just here in the United States. Think about that for a second.
60 million a day means that there are 21 billion 900 million plastic bottles disposed of each year here in the US. When you consider the whole world it's astounding. So just from that information alone. Are plastic water bottles eco friendly?
Not only did I find out, much to my surprise, how many get thrown away daily. I thought about the fact that plastic bottles are a petroleum product so I wanted to know just how much it takes to make that many bottles.
The Pacific Institute finds that it took approximately 17 million barrels of oil equivalent to produce plastic for bottled water consumed by Americans in 2006. That's enough energy to fuel more than 1 million American cars and light trucks for a year.
And we're worried about an oil shortage. The other challenge with plastic bottles for water is the recent studies that have shown some plastics leach out certain chemicals if you reuse them which can be very bad for your health.
According to the National Resources Defense Council, (NRDC): Some baby bottles, water bottles, and other clear plastic containers are made of polycarbonate plastic, a polymer made with the chemical bisphenol A (BPA).
BPA is a hormone disrupting chemical that has been linked to a number of abnormalities such as reproductive abnormalities, pre-cancerous changes in breast and prostate as well as obesity and insulin resistance leading to diabetes.
So when you ask the question "Are plastic water bottles eco friendly?" I think the only answer is; "No they're not." I don't even think they're all that health friendly.
So, what's a safe, eco friendly alternative to plastic water bottles? Lightweight stainless steel is a great choice for an eco friendly water bottle. Stainless steel particularly food grade stainless is toxin free so there's nothing to leach into your drinks. Plus if you ever had to recycle it stainless steel is 100 percent recyclable.
The stainless steel surface doesn't require a liner like other metals do so it won't retain odors. Plus if you make sure the bottle you get also has a stainless steel lid you won't ever have to worry about BPA's touching your water.
